Because the order matters—and science makes it smarter.
Layering skincare can feel like a puzzle. With so many products available—serums, moisturizers, exfoliants, eye creams—how do you know what goes where, or what works together? Understanding the proper order and combinations can make a big difference in how effective your routine is.
At Lifeline® Skin Care & ProPlus, we develop scientifically advanced formulas—powered by human stem cell extracts—to work with your skin’s biology. When layered properly, our products help drive real results.
Here’s a breakdown to take the guesswork out of your routine.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Always apply products in order of consistency: lighter, water-based products first, heavier creams and oils last. This allows active ingredients to absorb properly and prevents heavier products from blocking lighter ones.
Step-by-Step Guide to Smart Skincare Layering
1. Cleanser
Start with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. Clean skin sets the stage for everything that follows.
2. Exfoliator (2–3 times per week)
Use exfoliants like our Dual Action Exfoliator after cleansing and before applying any serums. It clears away dead skin cells, improving absorption of active ingredients.
Tip: Don’t exfoliate daily—2 to 3 times a week is plenty to avoid over-sensitizing the skin.
3. Toner or Essence (if using)
If you use a toner or hydrating mist, apply it now to balance the skin’s pH and prep for treatment products.
4. Serum
This is your most potent step. Apply your treatment serum—like Advanced Aqueous Treatment —before anything occlusive. Serums deliver concentrated actives deep into the skin and should always go on first.
5. Eye Cream
Use your ring finger to gently tap Eye Firming Complex around the orbital bone. This area is more delicate and benefits from targeted peptides and stem cell extracts.
6. Moisturizer
Lock in hydration and reinforce your skin barrier with a nourishing moisturizer. Try Advanced Recovery Complex to hydrate while protecting against environmental stress.
7. SPF (AM only)
Sunscreen should be your final step in the morning, after moisturizer. Never skip it—UV exposure is the #1 cause of premature aging.
What Not to Mix
Avoid layering too many active ingredients (like acids and retinoids) at once, especially if you have sensitive skin. Stick with one or two actives per routine.
Exfoliating products and retinol can increase irritation when used together. Alternate days or use one in the morning and the other at night.
Oil-based products should go last, even if they contain actives—they can block water-based serums from penetrating properly.
